Egmore Railway Station Redevelopment with a Temporary Ticket Counter to Ease Passenger Hassles

 Southern Railway (SR) has embarked on a significant endeavour with the redevelopment of Egmore Railway Station, a crucial hub in the region. Having secured the tender in October 2022, the project is now in full swing, propelled forward with construction efforts estimated at a formidable cost of Rs 734.91 crore.

Acknowledging the disruptions caused by ongoing restoration activities, Southern Railway sources have announced a timely measure to alleviate passenger inconveniences. A temporary ticket counter is poised to make its debut at Egmore station's exit side, strategically positioned on EVK Sampath Road. This interim solution aims to cater to passengers' needs until the comprehensive redevelopment project reaches fruition by 2025.

Egmore Railway Station, as one of the city's four primary terminuses, witnesses a relentless stream of foot traffic, particularly during peak hours. Despite its current provision of two unreserved and three reserved counters, serpentine queues continue to be a ubiquitous sight, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced amenities.

In response to restoration work, passengers have rallied for improved facilities. Murugan, a member of the disabled community, passionately advocates for the installation of seating and rest facilities in close proximity to the ticket counters, particularly addressing the challenges faced by individuals with mobility impairments. Moreover, a considerable portion of the station's demographic, comprising elderly and illiterate passengers, remains reliant on traditional ticketing methods, often bypassing digital alternatives like the UTS app or ATVM machines due to unfamiliarity.

Amidst these impassioned pleas for accessibility and convenience, passengers echo a unified call for the railway authorities to ensure an adequate number of ticket counters catering to diverse needs. Beyond mere functionality, they emphasize the imperative of inclusivity and ease of access for all passengers traversing through Egmore Railway Station.
